I have just returned from a most amazing trek in the foothills of the Himalayas in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, organised by Discover Adventure. It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done but I learned a very important lesson when I thought I genuinely could not go on. With the support and encouragement of my fellow trek-mates, I learned to smile during the difficult climbs and laugh in the company of the most amazing bunch of brave and fun-loving team mates.
So, whenever you feel like giving up on your journey, stop for a second and connect your body with your mind. Tell yourself you CAN do it. Don’t think of that high mountain you have to climb or perhaps the steep ascent you have to overcome. Just think of the next step……….and then the next step after that……………….and then the next step after that………………………and the next step after that. I’m sure your get the gist. One slow step at a time. Don’t look too far in advance, just focus on the next step. And, guess what? You get there! Plus, you get the chance to see stunning views of nature at its best - just think, if you gave up, look what you would have missed. The splendour and beauty of nature makes every effort worth it.
Annapurna Range from close range - awe-inspiring!
When you manage to take that next step, remember to smile. It is amazing how it makes such a difference to your outlook as you carry on. People you meet along your path will see that smile and will return that smile. Not only will you have cheered yourself up, but you will have made a positive impact on people you meet too. Smiling is contagious!
It's steep but I'll keep smiling!
I found that when I got to my next camp stop, the relief led to exhilaration and good humour and everyone felt the joy of reaching our daily goal. This resulted in us all gathering together and laughing and joking and generally having a great time. It didn’t matter if we were drinking tea or a beer, we shared hilarious moments that happened during the day.
With my laughter-accomplice, Ellen.
For every effort and for every doubt along the road, a smile and a laugh is all you need to keep going!
Enjoy the adventure.
